HDR Photography

I took this photo using a technique of photography known as HDR photography or High Dynamic Range photography. What I did was take several of the same exact photos (using a tripod of course) using bracketing. This way I could get lights and darks...and so fourth. Then I took the images and put them all together into one in photoshop. After that I took the image into another program and did did some tonemapping. This second program is responsible for the watermark on my photos, because I am using a trial version of the program, so they think I'll get tired of the watermark being on all my photos and so I'll want to buy it. Not quite. Though this type of photography produces great results...often very embellished, I am not all that fond of it, because it takes away from the true essence of what I feel photography is...truth or real life. So, I might continue to dabble in this, even though I could never use it in my photojournalism work, I will always feel somewhat like a cheater, because it is not exactly truth.

Highbridge Film Festival

Each year Asbury hosts what is known as the Highbridge Film Festival. There is a viewing of student films (high school and college) in the famous Hughes Auditorium and then there is a huge party afterwards in the Student Center. This year I was asked to act as "paparazzi". I wasn't all too impressed with my work, but they are alright. Thanks for visiting!

Hello! I know, it's been quite a while since I have produced any images for you all to see. To be quite honest, I haven't even had much time to pick up the camera since I have been so bogged down with classes, homework, and work. But today...today I have finished my last classes of my freshman year in college! Can I get an amen? Ha ha ha....Anywho, I was able to get out last weekend and do some shooting. I was really excited about these baseball photos. There is one other one I have, but I can't post it because I am entering it into a contest and it is against the rules to post it. Hello my friends! I appologize for not posting much these past few weeks...again, the whole school thing just gets in my way :) Tomorrow I will start my first "official" night as Photo Editor for The Collegian as to Assistant Photo Editor. I've been slowly taking over the reins these past few weeks, so I'm feeling ok about it. The only thing I'm worried about is having enough photos for this weeks edition. I never sent out photo requests to any of the photographers, so it's all up to me on this one. We'll see how that works out... Other than that....I picked up another wedding for this summer. Well, things aren't 100% yet, but I'm feeling pretty confident. Thanks for reading!

Alright...well, I went with my dad and his band last Saturday to a parade in New Philadelphia. A newly formed band, this was their first parade together. These are some really great people and I love hanging out with them! Also, I've got some wedding photos from the wedding I shot this past weekend, but I'm going to wait and post them in a few days. I haven't gotten the chance to show the bride and groom the photos yet and I figure it's only fair.

Thie photo above made the front page feature photo in today's Alliance Review. The other two photos were in as well. These photos were taken at the Louisville Fire Department truck dedication. The LFD just purchased a new truck with the help of a grant and so they had a little dedication ceremony in honor of it. I encourage you all to go to the Alliance Review web page and read the story to understand a little more about it. There is a link on the right side of this page. Just click on it and it will take you right to the site. This is one of the councilman drying the truck after it had been hosed down by the reitring truck. The truck was even blessed with holy water!

Arlington National Cemetery

This past spring, after visiting Arlington National Cemetery I discovered a photo project from National Geographic photographed by Bruce Dale about the cemetery. These photos were so powerful that the first time I saw them I had tears in my eyes and goosebumps running down my spine. These photos were that good! Anyways, I bought the book and have even brought it with me down here to college. Red River Gorge

This past Saturday I went with a few girls on my hall to the Red River Gorge. It's about an hour and a half from Campus. I was in such awe at the beauty of it all. We were only on one particular trail out of many. I was afraid that we would have missed all the beautiful colors of the leaves, but there was still a pretty good amount of color left for us to enjoy. I wasn't all that happy with how my photos turned out, but I did manage to get these three. I hope you all like them!

Some good news: I was asked to be assistant photo editor for The Asbury Collegian here on campus! I must say....I'm rather excited about that. Not only is this a great opportunity, but it's scholarship money as well. I had to turn in a cover letter and resume and will probably have to go through a sort of interview process. I started my training this past Monday though. I just thought that I would let you all know, as I don't get to talk to some of you on a regular basis now. Thanks again for all of your support. Carnation event's have begun and so I've been one busy little photographer. All the photos below were in today's paper. To be quite honest, I'm quite proud of them. This past Tuesday I did a job at the Giant Eagle in the Strip. I was hired by them to take photos of this contest which they were hosting known as a Bag-A-Thon. Basically, whoever can bag a set amount of products fastest wins. This was a rather big event. They had amazing food displays, which were then devoured and lots of big-wigs where there as well. I thought that I would share some of my favorite photos from the event.

Ahh well...the lady on the left is the Mayor of Louisville and the man on the right is the President of the company (the one on the sign) which is opening a plant in Louisville. This is actually a very exciting thing, as it will bring good jobs and business to Louisville.

I just thought that I would give you all a taste of the FRONT page of yesterday's paper! Yes...my photos made the front page. The first photo was the main one, then the photo of the hand with the ring was a little under it and finally the third photo followed on the next page. I'm pretty pumped! That's my first front pager! All of these photos were taken at Kings Jewelry inside Carnation mall. All of the girls are the Carnation Queen contestants. They were given a lesson on diamonds and so fourth. Then they were set loose on the store.

I was reading this book on Photojournalism yesterday and in the forward I came across a pretty cool qoute: "Chance favors the prepared mind." I found this to be quite true this weekend as I was shooting the Hot Stove Baseball tournament Saturday and Sunday. Sports photography is a bit of a challenge for me. If you want a good shot you have to be quick. So, I continue to work on this and hope to become better at it. The photos below were published in today's paper.

One of the perks of having a Dad who is a fire chief, is hearing about fires and such before everyone else. I was on my way home from an assignment on the fourth and saw my Dad speeding through an intersection to get to the fire. I decided to go as well! There weren't any flames by the time I got there, but there were some good photo opportunities. I took over a hundred photos and sent a few into The Review. This is the one that was published in today's paper. Pretty cool eh?

Flower Power

For those of you who didn't know, I was recently hired by the Alliance Review as a part-time photographer. Last Saturday I was at Carnation Mall on assignment covering the annual rose show. I was a bit frustrated with how some of my photos came out, but I did happen to come out with one which I particularly liked. The rose looks the way it does (I used absolutely no photoshop in this photo!) due to the crazy lighting. For those of you who have been inside Carnation Mall, you know that it's rather dark. BUT...there are some skylights which happened to be right above me while I was shooting. They were actually making me rather mad throughout the shoot because they were really throwing off some of my photos with all the crazy light being the way it was. Though, it just so happened to work out with this photo and a few others very similar to it.

When it rains...it pours. And for once, it's not in a bad way! I wanted to let everyone know that I received a scholarship, for my photography. It's the Manzer-Keener-Weffler Scholarship. I was notified last night about that and then this morning I found that my first photo for the Review was published in today’s paper! I'll try my best to get it scanned and then posted here for you all to see. I've been giving some serious thought into investing in a scanner. Maybe I'll do that today. Anyways, I want to give my most sincere thanks to those of you who have been so encouraging to my photography endeavors. It means the world to me to know that I have support and that at least someone will look at my photos when nobody else will. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

So, today I went on a little hike at a nature preserve not far from my house ran by Mount Union College. I go there from time to time either just to hike or to take pictures. I've been giving a lot of thought to this, and so I decided to test it out. I will be going to school for not only photography but for journalism (magazine journalism) as well. I want to make my writing a little better known, as I tend to keep it quietly hidden away in a notebook or in some file deep within my computer. I do a lot of poetry as well as other types of prose involving various experiences or thoughts. I've got an idea of what I want to post on here, though it is rather long. Maybe I'll make a shorter version or I'll post the entire thing. Either way I have some editing to do before I post it. Keep an eye out, for I will have it up shortly. I just wanted to let everyone know that, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth. I recently just got a new job and so I have been working more than ever. On top of that I'm just finishing up my senior year and getting ready for college. I'm on spring break this week so It is possible that I might have some time to take some photos. We'll see. In case you haven't noticed...I'm starting to get real bored here. This whole being inside thing just isn't working for me. But FEAR NOT! I've got something lined up this weekend. Hopefully some good photos will come of it. You may be surprised at what you see. Anyways, here is something; I'm not sure really what. I'm bored. Enough said I guess. It's unique depending on how you look at it. A little flat maybe.

I've begun to realize that people tend to be the best subjects suited for my photographic abilities. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing a small shortage of...humans. Alas, here is the fruit of my non-human labors. Being a writer as well as a photographer, I take great comfort in words and the power which they can create. Words may sometimes go much deeper than what they seem upon the first read; the same can be said with a photograph. You may look at this photo and see some scrabble tiles on a scrabble board which spell D-R-E-A-M-S. I look at it and see something a bit different. I could take the time to explain what it is I see, but much like writing, the reader/viewer can take something completely different away from the work than the intended. And so, I leave you to dream and see what it is you find within yourself.

I had actually thought that I had lost these pictures. Lost and found, I have discovered them once again. Anyways, these were obviously taken in our nations fine capital of Washington, D.C. My gift to you today is a little thing called patriotism.

I've realized that when you click on a picture it will appear in a very large form; this is all due to my neglegence. My camera deals with very large file sizes and I tend to be very lazy when posting them on the internet and therefore do not make them smaller. So, starting with the picture below you can now click on the picture and you will not see a giant eyeball or something of the sort. My apologies.

I'm tired of being cooped up inside. So, with little else to do other than homework, I decided to take a photo adventure out of doors this afternoon. This is the only picture I really like out of them all. It's a little weird, but yet creative. It hits me in some way, though I'm not exactly sure how to explain it. Without the depth of field being the way it is, the picture would have been nothing. I thought about doing some photoshop editing, but after playing around with it for a while, I decided against it. Sometimes a photo is better left untouched. Enjoy my friends. So are you wondering what the picture actually is? Well, I'm not willing to say just yet. It might be fun to make a guessing game out of it. Though, I suppose if you ask me nicely, I may feel obliged to give an answer.

Sports Photography

Sports photography has proven to be a challenge for me. When you have fast moving objects or people it's very easy to produce a blurred shot. I have really gained a better understanding of shutter speed and aperature through my exploration in sports photography. Shooting a basketball game in a poorly lit gym is a difficult thing, but through a bit of experimentatation and practice, I have been able to conquer it for the most part. Below are some of my latest.

This is probably one of the first ever half-way decent photos I ever took. This was origianlly on film (Like the old-timers..ha ha ha) and I had it scanned. Theres not much to it. I just happened to notice how the composure of the shot worked out. My friend here was just messing around and stuck her upper body through that tree and I loved it. Then I made her pose with a smile. She would kill me if she knew this picture was up here, but I like it. It's a very nice picture of her.
