Background

I've always been rather intrigued with photographs. Photos could alway's take me places that I could never go; and still today they do. Images hold such a powerful force in society today. Without them, could you possibly imagine a newspaper or magazine?

I began to really grow serious about photography my Junior year in high school. I had recieved my first camera for Christmas the year before, but had not really put much energy into it until then. I attended Asbury College in Wilmore, KY  during my first year of college where I served as photo editor of the school paper. Starting in the fall semester of 2008 I  began attending Kent State University where I am part of their photojournalism program. During the summer and while on breaks, I work as a part-time photographer for The Alliance Review, the local newspaper from my hometown of Alliance, Ohio. I really enjoy my time there and have graciously been given the opportunity to practice and advance my photography skills through my work for them.

The photos below and in the blog archive have been taken for various photo classes, The Alliance Review, The Asbury Collegian, and for my own enjoyment. I hope that you like them!

Can you hear me now?

I figured that I might as well post the other two photos that were also published in today's Alliance Review. (I must admit though, they look so much better in print!) I took these Saturday as well; they are of the Alliance Amateur Radio Club. The club was holding a competition/practice for radio transmission in case of emergency.

Great Scotts

Saturday I went to Wellington, Ohio with my dad, to the Ohio Scottish games. I took some of the photos below of a young man named Timothy, who will be a freshman in High School this year. Timothy took first place in his very first competition. Two of these photos were also published in today's Alliance Review.

Flower Power

For those of you who didn't know, I was recently hired by the Alliance Review as a part-time photographer. Last Saturday I was at Carnation Mall on assignment covering the annual rose show. I was a bit frustrated with how some of my photos came out, but I did happen to come out with one which I particularly liked. The rose looks the way it does (I used absolutely no photoshop in this photo!) due to the crazy lighting. For those of you who have been inside Carnation Mall, you know that it's rather dark. BUT...there are some skylights which happened to be right above me while I was shooting. They were actually making me rather mad throughout the shoot because they were really throwing off some of my photos with all the crazy light being the way it was. Though, it just so happened to work out with this photo and a few others very similar to it.

It's raining...

When it rains...it pours. And for once, it's not in a bad way! I wanted to let everyone know that I received a scholarship, for my photography. It's the Manzer-Keener-Weffler Scholarship. I was notified last night about that and then this morning I found that my first photo for the Review was published in today’s paper! I'll try my best to get it scanned and then posted here for you all to see. I've been giving some serious thought into investing in a scanner. Maybe I'll do that today. Anyways, I want to give my most sincere thanks to those of you who have been so encouraging to my photography endeavors. It means the world to me to know that I have support and that at least someone will look at my photos when nobody else will. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Natural Wonder

For those of you who didn't know, I have a slight admiration for nature, all this natural wonder which surrounds us. So, today I went on a little hike at a nature preserve not far from my house ran by Mount Union College. I go there from time to time either just to hike or to take pictures. Today I came back with a few good shots. Hope you like them. Have a wonderful day all!

Laura

Congratulations on your marriage Laura! I'm not going to lie. Every time I look at this photo I can't help but think about how I could have taken the shot from a different angle and paid a little more attention to the background. I decided to post it, beacause I felt there was still a glimpse of the feeling I was trying to portray through the shot. Unfortunately, there could have been so much more if I would have been more carefull. Forgive me.
