Background

I've always been rather intrigued with photographs. Photos could alway's take me places that I could never go; and still today they do. Images hold such a powerful force in society today. Without them, could you possibly imagine a newspaper or magazine?

I began to really grow serious about photography my Junior year in high school. I had recieved my first camera for Christmas the year before, but had not really put much energy into it until then. I attended Asbury College in Wilmore, KY  during my first year of college where I served as photo editor of the school paper. Starting in the fall semester of 2008 I  began attending Kent State University where I am part of their photojournalism program. During the summer and while on breaks, I work as a part-time photographer for The Alliance Review, the local newspaper from my hometown of Alliance, Ohio. I really enjoy my time there and have graciously been given the opportunity to practice and advance my photography skills through my work for them.

The photos below and in the blog archive have been taken for various photo classes, The Alliance Review, The Asbury Collegian, and for my own enjoyment. I hope that you like them!

Didn't Make the Cut

Thos photo didn't make it into today's paper because they wanted celebration shots, but I really liked it and wanted to post it. So here it is!

Some Final Hot Stove Photos

These photos were all published in today's paper. They are of three baseball teams from Alliance who made it far enough in the hot stove tournament to fight for the state title.

I've been behind...

Sorry...I've been a little behind. All of these photos were published in The Review at some point or another this past week. The two with the food are of a Thanksgiving Dinner held for the Ulster Teens from Ireland. Then the photo taken from above is of the Easter Seals group at the YMCA as they dropped eggs from the top of the building. They were trying to see who's egg broke and who's didn't. I've got some last and final Hot Stove photos coming up soon. The championship games were held today.

Can you say "FRONT PAGE!"?

I just thought that I would give you all a taste of the FRONT page of yesterday's paper! Yes...my photos made the front page. The first photo was the main one, then the photo of the hand with the ring was a little under it and finally the third photo followed on the next page. I'm pretty pumped! That's my first front pager! All of these photos were taken at Kings Jewelry inside Carnation mall. All of the girls are the Carnation Queen contestants. They were given a lesson on diamonds and so fourth. Then they were set loose on the store.

Boredom....

I am extremely bored today. I go to work at the pizza shop in a little while, and until then, I have nothing to do. So....I decided to take some photos of things. I kind of like this first one. It has some meaning. Enjoy boredom example #1.

The act of being bored.

This is result #2 of boredom. I use a Mac laptop...I like my Mac. I suggest Mac's for anyone who likes doing media type stuff. Enough said. Enjoy my lovely Mac photo.

"Take me out to the Ballgame"

There was some more Hot Stove action this weekend. I also did some other stuff, and when it appears in the Review I'll post it here. The photos below were in today's paper.

So Beautiful

I went and hung out with my Dad tonight in Louisville at the St. Louis festival. The festival is something that is put on every year. I went mostly for taking photos and this is probably my best one. I hope you all like it.

"Hey batter batter..."

I was reading this book on Photojournalism yesterday and in the forward I came across a pretty cool qoute: "Chance favors the prepared mind." I found this to be quite true this weekend as I was shooting the Hot Stove Baseball tournament Saturday and Sunday. Sports photography is a bit of a challenge for me. If you want a good shot you have to be quick. So, I continue to work on this and hope to become better at it. The photos below were published in today's paper.

And then....

Here are a few other photos that I took at the fire and kind of liked. Enjoy.

FIRE!

One of the perks of having a Dad who is a fire chief, is hearing about fires and such before everyone else. I was on my way home from an assignment on the fourth and saw my Dad speeding through an intersection to get to the fire. I decided to go as well! There weren't any flames by the time I got there, but there were some good photo opportunities. I took over a hundred photos and sent a few into The Review. This is the one that was published in today's paper. Pretty cool eh?

"O Say can you See...my photos were published!"

Yesterday I had quite the extensive assignment for The Review. Below are all the photos that were published in today's paper. Have I mentioned how much I love this job? Keep your eyes on the paper; hopefully tomorrow there will be a photo or two of a fire in Louisville from yesterday. I hope that you all had a wonderful 4th of July. God bless America!

Luck O' the Irish

This photo was published in today's paper, on the bottom left corner of the front page. It's not great, I always feel I could have done better. Nonetheless, it was fun taking it. I've got some more stuff coming up on the fourth so keep your eyes peeled.
